Internal Market and Consumer Protection

Achieving a fully-functioning Single Market

This committee plays a crucial role in coordinating national legislation related to the Single Market and Customs Union at the EU level. It focuses on ensuring the free movement of goods and professionals, harmonizing technical standards, promoting the right of establishment, and guaranteeing freedom to provide services, except in the financial and postal sectors. The committee also identifies and eliminates any obstacles that hinder the internal market's smooth functioning while promoting and protecting consumers' economic interests within the Single Market.

However, the current geopolitical environment presents several challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war against Ukraine have brought back trade barriers and limited free movement. The EU must learn from these challenges and prepare for the next crisis. The upcoming Single Market Emergency Instrument aims to prevent border closures and ensure European citizens have equal access to essential goods during a crisis.

For the EPP Group, a well-functioning Single Market is key to prosperity, innovation, and greater competitiveness. We aim to unlock the Digital Single Market's potential by working with all EU Member States to ensure practical, proper, and enforced Single Market rules. The new Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act are significant milestones for a new digital economy. They provide safer online platforms and better online experiences for consumers, fair competition on the merits online for businesses, and contribute to a fairer and more open digital world.
