EPP Group upholds Air Passenger Rights

Following today's vote in Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee on new rules for air passenger rights, the EPP Group is reiterating its commitment to protecting citizens' rights, also when they travel by air. As EU member states in Council want to water down existing rules on compensation in the event of long delays, the EPP Group is clear: citizens' rights must be a top priority.

"Behind every delay or cancellation, there are real people, with missed birthdays, funerals, weddings, and job interviews," says Andrey Novakov MEP, European Parliament's lead negotiator on air passenger rights. "We are committed to finding a fair balance between the interests of the aviation industry and the rights of passengers. However, we will not compromise on the current levels and fundamental principles of passenger protection, including the three-hour threshold for compensation. This is a crucial safeguard for passengers, and we will work to ensure that it is maintained."

"The European Parliament has a responsibility to ensure that citizens are treated fairly when they travel by air. This means providing clear and robust protection for passengers when their flights are delayed or cancelled. We propose a range of practical solutions, including a pre-filled form for reimbursement and compensation, immediate compensation in case of denied boarding, a choice between printed and digital boarding passes, and no additional charging of kids for the obvious fact that they need to sit next to their parents. We believe that these measures will help to reduce frustration and uncertainty for passengers, and we will work to ensure that they are included in the final agreement," Novakov adds.

The EPP Group will continue to work towards a balanced and fair outcome that prioritises the needs and interests of citizens.
