Old rights preserved, new rights added: EPP saves air passenger rights

Today, the European Parliament’s negotiation team on air passenger rights confirmed a compromise with EU Member States that preserves the current three-hour delay threshold and maintains existing compensation levels, while adding new protections for travellers.

"The EPP Group promised passengers that their rights will be protected. And today we delivered. We fought for people, not statistics. Because behind every delay and every cancellation, there are real lives. The three-hour threshold and compensation levels remain. Families will be seated together without extra fees," said Andrey Novakov MEP, Parliament’s lead negotiator on air passenger rights.

In addition of maintaining today’s protections, the new rules make it clearer and easier for passengers to exercise their rights, while giving airlines greater legal certainty.

"Passengers will receive an email telling them how to claim compensation. While airlines get a label that will convince more people to 'fly European'. And we give the legal clarity that everyone needs. This is a balanced result. Europe strengthens passenger rights and defends a strong and competitive aviation sector," Novakov emphasised.
