A lot remains to be done in the disability sector to ensure that no one is left behind, David Casa said while addressing the European Parliament on Wednesday.

During a debate on an EU strategy for the rights of persons with disabilties post-2024, Casa, who leads Malta’s delegation to the EPP, noted that millions of persons with disabilities in Europe are being left behind.

“Whenever a person with a disability does not find the necessary support it is a loss for everyone - the country, the economy, society. Because everyone has something to offer.”

Casa said that although action has already been taken by Parliament, there is still work to be done for equity to be achieved for persons with disabilities.

"With the European Disability Card we started to remove certain obstacles but we still have a way to go: to improve access to employment, to offer services that work, an education that welcomes everyone, technology that opens, rather than close, doors," Casa said.

What persons with disabilities want is “not pity or favours” but "to live in dignity', he insisted.
