“The Malta Band Clubs Association deserves to be the recipient of the European Citizen’s Prize because their role in society is eminently that of encouraging good European citizenry,” said the PN Delegation in the European Parliament.

During a PN Delegation meeting the Maltese EPP MEPs decided to nominate the Malta Band Clubs association for the European Citizen’s Prize which will be chosen in September 2017.

MEPs David Casa, Roberta Metsola and Therese Comodini Cachia said;

“The Malta Band Clubs Association inculcates in children, from a very young age, the European values of tolerance and solidarity. Its primary focus is, of course, teaching music but its efforts to educate children of how to behave cannot be underestimated.

Maltese band clubs are drivers of societal engagement especially for youth and women. They reinforce ties between generations because they encourage young people to interact with older people. Women not only play instruments but also take an active part in the organisational structures of these clubs.

Most band clubs have twinning agreements with other European towns and villages. Some send their musicians to play abroad and even invite foreign bands to play in Malta. This helps them to reinforce their European identity.

For these reasons we think that the Malta Band Clubs Association deserves to be the recipient of the European Citizen’s Prize because their role in society is eminently that of encouraging good European citizenry.”
