MEP David Casa welcomed the decision of the Maltese courts to open a criminal inquiry into the allegations of money laundering, conspiracy and criminal organisation committed by Christian Borg and No Deposit Cars Malta Ltd. This following an application by several clients of Borg’s company who claimed they were defrauded by No Deposit Cars.

Casa through his lawyer Dr Jason Azzopardi had also submitted a court application in April after authorities failed to investigate and prosecute Christian Borg, despite allegations of transactions that should have been flagged as money laundering risks.

“Citizens should not have to go to court to have criminals investigated, more so when evidence is already public. I am glad to have also done my part to move one step closer to justice in this case” Casa insisted. “There is no justification for the police’s failure to act when the Financial Crimes Investigations Unit had been in possession of the facts for several months. The authorities must be faster to protect citizens from criminality. Instead they protect criminals who are close to people in power”.

Christian Borg, known for flaunting his wealth and his close ties to Prime Minister Robert Abela, is facing separate allegations of kidnapping and fraud. Casa hoped that the magisterial inquiry would be prompt in seeking justice.

“I feel it is my moral duty to take this step,” Casa had said in April. “Today’s decision vindicates that step”, Casa said. He reiterated the BOV’s duty to provide a public explanation as to why it did not flag the illegal deposits made by Borg to the FIAU.

“It is unacceptable that normal people are made to jump through hoops simply to manage their own savings, while criminals with friends in high places make a mockery of law and society, laundering their money and causing irreparable harm to our reputation,” Casa warned.

The Magistrate’s decision to open a criminal inquiry also took into account the information provided by Mr Casa in his application.

Casa thanked lawyer Dr Jason Azzopardi for his work on the case.
