Dr Robert Aquilina’s activism must not be curtailed because of violent threats against his work, European Parliament Media Working Group Co-Chairs David Casa and Ramona Strugariu have said, calling for effective protection to be granted to him and his family.

The Maltese state is obliged to uphold a safe environment that promotes freedom of expression and political discourse. This is especially true after the systemic issues identified by the public inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was targeted with impunity for her reporting on corruption.

There has been no demonstrable efforts to combat that political climate from persisting, to the detriment of healthy public debate. Threats to Dr Aquilina, his wife, and children are still forthcoming as a result of his activism, most recently in his published book documenting corruption and abuse of power.

As Dr Robert Aquilina’s right to speak is unduly being curtailed by harassment and threats, effective protection must be provided to him and his family. Furthermore, in line with international standards in furtherance of creating an enabling environment for activists, the Maltese Government must refrain from smear campaigns and must act promptly against threats as they arise.
