Addressing the plenary session of the European Parliament, MEP David Casa defended the Maltese against the unbridled greed off the backs of the Maltese, for which justice is being continually denied.

He slammed the state capture by the Labour Government “to protect those in power, so that those who are meant to serve the people can continue feeding their unbridled greed off the backs of the people.”

Casa warned that the threats to the rule of law were only getting worse, a situation marred by a shambolic track record of prosecutions and the zero conviction rate of corruption against high level political officials. He criticised the “never-ending investigations, prosecutions that do not succeed because of sheer and intentional incompetence”.

Selective justice is not justice, Casa claimed, highlighting the rift between action taken against the corrupt and the action taken against those who expose them. He condemned the swift action taken against Mark Camilleri in contrast with the impunity afforded to Rosianne Cutajar and Yorgen Fenech in the same case.

“Only when you expose corruption do investigations conclude quickly. Only when you expose corruption do you finally see criminal proceedings.”

He called on the European Commission to do its duty and uphold the rule of law, “to ensure that institutions protect the Maltese, not those who betrayed them. To prosecute the corrupt, not those who expose them.”
