Former Prime Minister of Italy Giulio Andreotti is one of the greatest Italian and European politicians of all time, and he was one of the politicians who had inspired me to enter politics. Partit Nazzjonalista Head of Delegation in the European Parliament David Casa said this as he was addressing an event at the European Parliament, commemorating the political life of Giulio Andreotti, 100 years after his birth.

MEP Casa was invited to address this event as he used to accompany former Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Guido De Marco, and former European Commissioner and former Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg, for meetings with Gulio Andreotti in Rome. “It was during these meetings that Andreotti, unknowingly, motivated me to enter politics to improve the quality of life of families and businesses. Andreotti was a dedicated constituency politician caring for people’s needs,” said MEP Casa.

He referred to the three visits that Andreotti had in Malta: in 1986 with former Prime Minister of Italy Bettino Craxi, during which the first Italo-Maltese Financial Protocol was established; in the early nineties for the inauguration of AZAD in Valletta; and for a commemoration of former Prime Minister of Malta Ġorġ Borg Olivier at the Auberge d’Aragon.

In his speech, MEP Casa made reference to the strong belief and trust that Giulio Andreotti had in the Italian judicial system, even when he was the subject of criminal prosecution. “He would never play the populist tune of “an unjust justice”, even though that was what it appeared to be. He expressed the willingness to cooperate with justice, so that the truth would come out,” said MEP Casa.

The event, organised by the Italian Delegation in the EPP Group, was also addressed by the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, the EPP Secretary General Antonio López-Istúriz White, former Prime Minister of Slovenia and currently and MEP Alojz Peterle, together with other distinguished guests.
