Stronger borders, faster decisions, taking back control: Migration Pact applies from 12 June 2026

Migration op-ed

From tomorrow, Europe gets stronger protection at its external borders. As the EU Migration and Asylum Pact becomes fully applicable on 12 June 2026, mandatory screening, security checks and faster border procedures become part of the EU migration system. The laws are in place. Now Member States must deliver.

"For years, the EPP Group fought for a common European approach to migration. Today, that work becomes reality," said Tomas Tobé MEP, EPP Group Vice-Chair and European Parliament Rapporteur for the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation.

"After years of deadlock, Europe finally has the tools to strengthen its external borders and take back control of migration. Now we must make the system work."

The Pact introduces stronger external border management, mandatory screening and security checks, faster asylum procedures, and a solidarity mechanism to support Member States facing migratory pressure. It also strengthens cooperation with third countries and provides new tools to address irregular migration.

The EPP Group underlines that implementation will now be crucial. "The laws are in place. The European Parliament and the Commission have delivered. Now Member States must deliver too. Citizens expect results," Tobé added.

The EPP Group also stresses that effective returns are essential for a credible migration policy. "A return decision must lead to a return. Otherwise, the system loses credibility. That is why the Return Regulation to be voted next week is the necessary final piece of the Pact," said Lena Düpont MEP, EPP Group Spokeswoman on Home Affairs.

"The days of 27 different migration policies are over. Migration is a European challenge, and it requires a European response. The Pact finally gives us one," she adds.

The EPP Group will continue to push for the full implementation of the Pact, stronger protection of Europe's external borders and effective return policies to ensure that migration is managed in a fair, orderly and controlled manner.
