Deal on stronger Europol to fight migrant smuggling

The European Parliament and EU Member States have agreed on new rules to boost the fight against migrant smuggling and human trafficking. These rules include giving Europol expanded powers.

“With this new law, we are stepping up the EU’s fight against migrant smuggling,” said Jeroen Lenaers MEP, the lead negotiator for the European Parliament. “Ruthless smuggling networks are making billions by exploiting vulnerable people and undermining our borders. This law provides Europol with an additional €50 million in funding and 50 new staff members. These resources will strengthen efforts against these criminal networks.

“As part of the deal, a new Centre Against Migrant Smuggling will be set up within Europol. The centre will serve as a hub for cross-border cooperation and intelligence-sharing. It will work closely with national authorities, Eurojust, and Frontex,” Lenaers said.

“Better data analysis and sharing are key in our fight against criminals who profit from exploiting vulnerable people,” Lenaers added. “This law improves data sharing between national law enforcement and Europol. It also boosts Europol’s ability to process biometric data. The law strengthens Europol’s role in tackling these crimes online.”

Additionally, Europol will be better equipped to support Member States in fighting not only migrant smuggling and human trafficking, but also serious organised crime and terrorism. Europol’s ability to support Operational Task Forces and to deploy staff for analytical, operational, technical, and forensic support will be crucial in this effort.
