“Investing in dual-use, crisis-proof infrastructure benefits both civilian life and defence needs,” said Krzysztof Hetman MEP, regarding the mid-term review of the EU cohesion policy.

“Defence investments must prioritise dual-use capacities. For example, bridges should be built to support tank movements, if needed. Public facilities, such as community centres, schools, parking lots, and parks, serve daily life but can quickly convert into shelters or coordination hubs. The EPP Group insists on this”, stressed Hetman.

Today, the European Parliament will debate changes to the EU Cohesion Fund to address strategic challenges, with a vote scheduled for tomorrow.

According to the EPP Group, additional funding is essential to rapidly address urgent needs, such as dual-use defence, civil preparedness, and resilience. This includes a one-time 20 per cent pre-financing advance and the option of up to 100 per cent Union co-financing.

"In a worsening security situation, both globally and on European borders, Europe must be more flexible and willing to adapt," Hetman concluded.
