Sánchez must be held accountable for corruption and abuse of power

Spain

The EPP Group stands firm in defending democracy and the rule of law across Europe. In Spain, this means that the Socialist Government must return the voice to the Spanish people. “Corruption is at the heart of the party and government, there are attacks on judges and law enforcement, and institutions are being dismantled - with the Attorney General just one step away from facing trial. This is Sánchez’s legacy for this legislature,” said Dolors Montserrat MEP, Vice-Chair of the EPP Group, ahead of the Parliament's plenary debate on growing concerns over the rule of law in Spain.

“Every day, Spain wakes up to a new corruption scandal. Trusted senior figures close to Pedro Sánchez have been caught distributing kickbacks, engaging in prostitution, and appointing their friends to public institutions. Meanwhile, the Attorney General appointed by Sánchez is on the verge of being prosecuted for leaking information intended to harm a political rival from the EPP. Enough is enough. Europe must demand that Sánchez put an end to this,” Montserrat added.

EPP Group Vice-Chair Tomas Tobé MEP strongly condemned the decline of the rule of law in Spain: “Corruption and abuse of power are a direct threat to the rule of law. The growing scandal involving the Spanish Prime Minister, his relatives, the Socialist Party, and his government is deeply troubling. Attacks on the free press, law enforcement, and the judiciary investigating these cases are unacceptable. The rule of law is the foundation of our democracy - it applies to all, without exception. We must defend it and demand accountability."

The EPP Group calls on the European Commission to support the Spanish people and uphold the rule of law in Spain.
