The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens, and the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul, following the invalid referendum on the impeachment of the Romanian President, have called on the Romanian Government to return to its normal work, with immediate effect, and restore the credibility of Romania:

“We take note that the referendum to impeach the President of Romania, Traian Basescu, has failed. The political instability that was triggered by the attempt to impeach the Head of State needs to come to an end. Irresponsible political actions do not belong in the European Union and are not tolerated by the European institutions and the international democratic community.”

"Romania’s international credibility was damaged over the past weeks due to the abusive actions of the Government led by Victor Ponta. The Government now needs to return to responsible actions as a matter of utmost priority. The Government needs to implement all the measures requested by the European Commission concerning the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. Furthermore, the Government needs to continue to implement, without delay and deviations, the commitments made towards Romania’s international partners, including the IMF. Romania needs reforms along the line of other European countries, not along any obscure agreements signed by the Presidents of the Socialist and Liberal Parties. The Romanian people deserve to live according to European standards, not driven by the parallel agendas of USL politicians”, President Martens and Chairman Daul underlined.

“We are looking forward to continuing our cooperation with President Basescu and all political actors committed to respecting the rule of law and the European values and norms that guide us,” Martens and Daul concluded.
