Return Proposal a Good Starting Point
"If you don’t have the right to be in Europe, you shouldn’t be in Europe. The EPP Group welcomes the new legislative proposal to speed up the return of illegal migrants. A credible and efficient return policy is essential for any effective migration management system. It is clear that stronger action is needed at the European level. This proposal is a good starting point," said Tomas Tobé MEP, EPP Group Vice-Chair for Legal and Home Affairs.
"While we welcome the legislative proposal, its final form is what truly matters. The EPP Group urges all political forces in the European Parliament to work together to create a strong Regulation that guarantees the effective return of those without the right to stay. Each year, nearly half a million illegal migrants are ordered to leave the EU, yet only one in five actually does so. This must be a turning point. An effective return policy is crucial for Europe's security," said Lena Düpont MEP, the EPP Group Spokeswoman on Home Affairs.
"Replacing the old Directive with a Regulation allows for faster, harmonised implementation and mutual recognition of return decisions across EU countries. It is also crucial that the new legislative proposal includes stricter consequences for non-compliance, measures to prevent absconding, longer detention periods and entry bans, and a legal framework for return hubs. These changes will enhance cooperation, enforcement, and control throughout the return process," concluded Düpont.
