“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Nicole Fontaine, former President of the European Parliament. After Simone Veil, the first woman elected as President of the European Parliament, we have lost another politician committed to the construction of Europe. As President of our Institution from 1999 to 2002, Nicole Fontaine was a tireless activist of a Europe that brings results”, said Franck Proust MEP, Head of the French Delegation of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.

“I would like to pay tribute to Nicole Fontaine. A militant of the European ideal, she worked tirelessly, as President of the European Parliament, for dialogue and peace. She even managed to bring together the Presidents of the Israeli and Palestinian parliaments for an historic handshake in the Strasbourg hemicycle. European Christian democracy has lost one of its distinguished personalities”, said Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group.
