Tax evasion is structural problem, not scandals over individuals

EPP Group wants to speed up process of setting up a joint EU list of tax havens

After the latest revelations on letter box companies in the Bahamas, the EPP Group has called once again for more international collaboration on tax matters.

“As with other similar revelations, we should be very cautious and deal with this in an orderly manner, avoiding any premature conclusions. The leaks have yet again underlined that what we are facing is a structural problem and not a scandal about individuals. It is not the first time that the EPP Group has called for closer international cooperation in tax matters in order to agree on efficient measures to tackle the problem of tax evasion", said Dariusz Rosati MEP, EPP Group Spokesman on the European Parliament's Panama Inquiry Committee which was set up after the revelations of the so-called Panama Papers.

Understanding the importance of the new Bahamas leaks, the EPP Group wants to deal with the revelations within the framework of the newly-established Panama Inquiry Committee. "We urge the European Commission and the Member States to speed up the process of setting up a joint list of tax havens. I am sure that the Panama Inquiry Committee is the best place to deal with the revelations correctly", Rosati stressed.
