Historic agreement for fighting crime

"This is an historic day for fighting crime in the EU. With this new agreement on electronic evidence, judicial authorities in different Member States will have more instruments to fight crime and terrorism, while ensuring data protection safeguards", said EPP Group negotiator Nuno Melo MEP, after the European Parliament and Member States reached an agreement on key elements of the new law package on collecting and preserving electronic criminal evidence across borders in the European Union.

"Criminals don't care about borders. The new e-evidence law will allow judicial authorities to request evidence from other Member States, or ask that the evidence be kept for future use. This is a major step forward for police and judicial cooperation in the EU. Now we have to build on this momentum to quickly finalise the outstanding details and have the instrument in place as soon as possible", Melo concluded.
