Commenting on the situation in Greece after Sunday's referendum, Manfred Weber, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, said:

"The result of the referendum will cause severe problems for Greece. It is realistic to expect a deterioration of the Greek people's situation. If necessary, Europe must help with humanitarian measures.

It is now Prime Minister Tsipras' duty to propose solutions to the dramatic situation he himself brought his country into. It is up to him to make proposals on the reforms and financial efforts he is willing to make in order to convince Greece's Eurozone partners. Europe will help in return for efforts on the Greek side. With the result of this referendum, many Eurozone countries have lost their willingness to help the Greek government. This makes it even more difficult to reach a compromise.

I find it worrying that it is mainly radical parties, far-left and far-right, that are celebrating the outcome of the referendum. We must fight with all our energy and determination against nationalistic rhetoric and national egoism. Europe is a community based on solidarity, not a club of egoists."
