EU steps up the fight against illegal pet trade
The EPP Group wants basic welfare rules for all cats and dogs in the EU. "We want better protection for cats and dogs, a stronger fight against illegal trade, and less unnecessary bureaucracy for their owners. The EU must ensure that responsible owners can enjoy their pets without hurdles, while strongly cracking down on illegal trade", said Salvatore De Meo MEP, the EPP Group’s negotiator on topic. His comments come after the European Parliament adopted on Thursday new welfare rules for cats and dogs.
"The EPP Group is particularly happy that the new law adopted today cracks down on illegal trade and irresponsible breeding by introducing clear tracking rules and setting basic welfare standards. It closes the loopholes that illegal traders have exploited for far too long," De Meo continued.
