EU leaders need to move on MFF, now

Business team construction crane and building money. Investment and success concept.

Ahead of next week's summit, the EPP Group is calling on EU leaders to step up and finally strike a deal on the long-term EU budget (MFF). This is the message we will reiterate today in plenary.

"Time is running out. Next year, several European countries will face major electoral deadlines, making stability all the more important for a continent already grappling with an increasingly uncertain international situation. While heads of state and government have been dithering for months, they must stop their penny-pinching and deliver. The European Parliament has done its job. Now it's time for EU leaders to do theirs," says Siegfried Mureșan MEP, Parliament's co-negotiator for the 2028-2034 EU budget and Vice-Chair of the EPP Group.

However, the urgency of reaching an agreement must not open the door to a cut-price MFF.

"We will not rubber-stamp a budget that does not work. A weaker EU budget means a weaker Europe, with fewer resources for defence and competitiveness, but also less support for our regions and farmers. A weaker EU budget would only fuel populism. The EPP Group will not accept a long-term EU budget that falls short of Europe’s needs," says Siegfried Mureșan.
