EU funds must not disappear with Fico's friends
The EPP Group is sounding the alarm over EU money vanishing in Slovakia under Robert Fico's government. Today, the European Parliament will debate two fact-finding missions to Slovakia in May and June 2025, during which MEPs raised serious concerns about the misuse of taxpayers' funds.
"EU money is being spent in a non-transparent, clientelist, and inefficient way. Fico is turning a blind eye, breaking basic EU rules on transparency and accountability," warned Tomáš Zdechovský MEP, EPP Group Spokesman on Budgetary Control.
"We won't stay silent while taxpayers' money is siphoned off. Those who profited illegally will have to pay it back and face a full investigation," he stressed.
Javier Zarzalejos MEP, Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, added: "In Slovakia, we saw attacks on judges, journalists and civil society, legal changes to shield allies from corruption, misuse of pardons, the dismantling of anti-corruption units and abuse of fast-track laws. The EU cannot tolerate this – not in Slovakia, not anywhere."
The Parliament's Budgetary Control and Civil Liberties Committees visited Slovakia in May and June to examine the management of EU funds and review threats to the rule of law and democracy.
