EPP Group urges swift action to rebuild trade and security alliance with U.S.
Today, the EPP Group adopted a new position paper calling for a close, renewed, and balanced transatlantic partnership with the United States. The EPP wants this partnership to be built on trust and predictability, with the EU maintaining its own values and preserving and strengthening its regulatory autonomy. The position paper urges swift implementation of the EU - US tariffs agreement, fairer burden-sharing within NATO, stronger European defence capabilities, coordinated support for Ukraine, and closer cooperation on trade, technology, energy security, and global challenges such as China’s rise, migration, climate, and AI.
“The position paper we adopted today is a first step towards paving the way to a strong agreement in trade with the US. Our transatlantic partnership is needed more than ever, but it must remain anchored in fairness, transparency, and mutual respect. The EU and the US should continue negotiations aimed at lowering remaining tariffs and resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. At the same time, together we must address the long-overdue reforms of multilateral institutions, particularly the WTO. The EPP has an important role in easing current trade and political tensions by promoting dialogue,” insists Zeljana Zovko MEP, EPP Group Vice Chair, who co-authored the paper.
"Today shows the foundation of the transatlantic relationship is security. EU-US relations are without doubt critically consequential and impactful on European defence. They must stay strong despite the challenges we face. It is also about managing uncertainty, which is why we need constant dialogue and to renew our partnership. The recent NATO summit confirmed our joint commitment to collective defence. The US is our strategic partner in both security and trade. At the same time, the EU must be clear-eyed and protect its own interests. We must preserve the EU's regulatory autonomy. In any scenario, the most important task is for Europe to build its own strength,” says Michał Szczerba MEP, EP standing rapporteur on the US.
