EPP Group will vote in favour of Mercosur to boost Europe’s economy
The EPP Group calls on the Member States to adopt today the EU-Mercosur trade agreement - a milestone deal which strengthens Europe’s competitiveness, strategic autonomy, and confirms Europe’s attachment to an open and free trade. The Group will vote in favour when the European Parliament is asked to give its consent.
“We expect the EU-Mercosur Agreement to be ready to be signed next week, and I believe that the signature should be a reason for satisfaction. This is a strategic agreement for Europe, which allows us to diversify our trade relations and strengthen our autonomy. It is a unique economic opportunity. Specifically for Europe, it will lead to an increase in exports of €4.9 billion and the creation of 440,000 jobs. And, which is fundamental for us - it addresses the concerns of the agricultural sector," stresses Gabriel Mato MEP, who leads Parliament’s negotiating team for the agreement.
“This agreement is not just about trade. It is about building lasting alliances, protecting our interests, strengthening our autonomy, and ensuring that Europe has reliable and predictable partners. Treaties are signed, but alliances are built - and this alliance is truly worth it”, Mato adds.
“I am very pleased to see the signing of the Mercosur trade agreement. Unlocking a free trade zone of 700 million consumers is exactly what Europe needs to boost its competitiveness in today’s increasingly uncertain global economy. By reducing tariffs and simplifying customs procedures, we will boost trade in goods, services, and investment, and strengthen supply-chain diversification,” says Jörgen Warborn MEP and EPP Group’s spokesman on International Trade.
“While others look inward, the EU continues to look outward, reflecting our values of open and free trade. The next essential step is smooth and swift ratification to secure increased trade, competitiveness, jobs, and long-term prosperity for Europe when we need it most," he insists.
