Commenting on the recent developments in the reform agenda of the Greek government, the Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul, made the following statement:

“Greece, although confronted with an unprecedented crisis, is acting with great responsibility. I truly appreciate the efforts and positive vision of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. His government, together with the Greek people, aims to give a long-term perspective to Greece's economy by proposing a new roadmap for modernization through the restructuring of the public sector, promoting investment and innovation and sustainability and creativity, in combination with the current austerity measures. We offer all our support for the reforms implemented by the Greek government.

I want to assure the Greek people that structural reforms will lead to a healthier fiscal system and a friendlier business environment. In the end, this will lead to sustainable growth and jobs. The direct benefits for Greek citizens will be numerous: from business opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises to a solid pension scheme.

When we look at the overall developments, we can see real progress since last year in Greece. We are therefore optimistic. The EPP Group stands behind Greece with all its force and every conviction. I have always praised the tremendous efforts of the Greek people in overcoming this economic hurdle. In a few years' time, when they look back, they will be proud of what they have achieved."
