Following a two-day visit to Athens, the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber MEP, said:

“The EPP Group fully supports the course of reforms and economic recovery pursued by the government of Antonis Samaras. I have told the Prime Minister that he can fully count on the solidarity of the EPP Group in the European Parliament. I have great respect for the difficult work done by the Greek Government but also for the readiness of the people to support necessary cuts. Greece is an example for other EU Member States where courageous reforms are also needed."

"Greece's success is becoming more and more visible. Economic recovery is obvious, budget consolidation is improving and investments are back. This pursuit of reforms should not be stopped now, as this would have the opposite effect and lead the country into greater difficulties. The EU will do everything it can to support the Greek Government's policy through targeted measures."

Background: During his visit to Athens on 26-27 August, Manfred Weber held talks with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, several Ministers, Greek EU Commissioner-designate Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Chair of the Nea Demokratia political group in the Greek Parliament, Athanasios Bouras.
