Demography in every EU policy

Multi-generation family relaxing on retaining wall

The EPP Group calls for action to help families in Europe thrive. Stronger support for working parents, shared caregiving between men and women, policies to balance work and home life, more intergenerational solidarity, and smarter demographic strategies that value life, rebuild social trust, and empower older citizens. These are some of the demographic policy proposals adopted today by the EPP Group in a Position Paper entitled 'Securing Europe’s Future through Family, Solidarity, and Intergenerational Responsibility'.

“Children and families are the foundation of our society. We are moving from one crisis to another, but demography is the slow-burning crisis that will overshadow all others. The EU must act now to avoid severe consequences for our way of life, competitiveness, and social cohesion,” said Romana Tomc MEP, EPP Group Vice-Chair.

Europe faces a sharp decline in birth rates, an ageing population, rising unplanned childlessness, and depopulation in rural areas. These trends pose significant risks to the labour market, social welfare, pension systems, and healthcare. In adopting its new position paper on demography, the EPP Group outlines the urgent measures needed to address the problem.

“We are dedicated to fostering intergenerational solidarity and ensuring long-term sustainability. Europe’s future depends on sustainable demographic policies that value human life and social trust,” Tomc stressed.
