Deforestation: Parliament backs Member States' agreement
The EPP Group welcomes the European Parliament's vote in favour of simplifying and improving the EU Deforestation Regulation, matching a balanced compromise already agreed by 24 EU countries. Today's vote ensures the effective prevention of illegal deforestation, while reducing unnecessary burdens on operators, farmers and foresters.
"Today's vote demonstrates the EPP Group's commitment to protecting the world's forests, while also listening to the concerns of farmers, foresters and businesses affected. Our position is based on the compromise that was supported by 24 Member States. It is a significant step forward in our efforts to promote economic growth and more sustainable forestry practices," says Christine Schneider MEP, Parliament's lead negotiator on the European Deforestation Regulation.
The regulation aims to ensure EU products do not drive global deforestation, but key elements required for its implementation, such as the IT system, are not even ready yet. It was obvious that the new rules had to be delayed. The EPP Group's concerns were shared by almost all EU Member States, MEP Schneider points out, resulting in the sensible agreement reached at the Council level. It was the EPP Group which tabled the position of the Council for today's vote, which has now been formally adopted by the Parliament.
“A one-year postponement for all companies, like the European Commission initially proposed, is essential to give authorities and operators the time needed to implement the rules properly. We also insisted on relief measures for micro and small producers in low-risk countries to ensure proportionate application for farmers and foresters. This approach avoids unnecessary bureaucracy, supports responsible forest management, and strengthens the long-term effectiveness of the regulation,” Schneider adds.
