“Malta is no tax haven” – PN MEPs
Important notice
Views expressed here are the views of the national delegation and do not always reflect the views of the group as a whole
The Socialist Group in the European Parliament - of which Alfred Sant, Miriam Dalli and Marlene Mizzi form part – is seeking to declare Malta a tax haven.
PN MEPs David Casa, Roberta Metsola and Francis Zammit Dimech stated:
“The PN delegation in the European Parliament is working not just to secure the vote of EPP MEPs but also to secure the vote of MEPs from across the political divide. It is telling that our Labour counterparts allowed for this amendment to be tabled in the first place. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that this Socialist proposal is defeated”.
"It is absolutely clear from all our discussions that the catalyst for this move is the Prime Minister's inability or unwillingness to act after Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri's secret offshore financial structures were exposed. He has damaged Malta's negotiating position to such an extent that MEPs from every political group are incredulous that Labour in Malta has spent all this effort defending these individuals when it should have been defending Malta's corner. Instead Joseph Muscat chose petty partisanship and pointed fingers. He chose Labour over Malta."
The vote, that could could have serious implications for Malta’s financial services sector, will take place in Strasbourg later today.
