MEP David Casa's report on taxation regarding the new legal status of the island of Mayotte has been adopted with overwhelming support by the European Parliament during its plenary session in Strasbourg yesterday. Mayotte is a French Overseas Region with an area of 374 square kilometres and a population of the 212,645. It is located the Northern Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mozambique. In a referendum in 2009 the population approved their accession to status of overseas region which took place in 2011. They are now due to become an Outermost Region of the European Union on 1 January 2014. The Casa Report caters for certain legislative amendments to European law in preparation for this change in status. "The vote on this Report had been postponed, as questions were raised concerning the legal basis on which the Commission put forward this proposal. Following a thorough analysis we have been assured that the legal basis was in fact correct and I was happy to recommend a vote in favour", explained Mr Casa. This is Mr Casa's seventh Report to be adopted by the European Parliament since 2009. David Casa is the Head of the PN Delegation in the European Parliament.
