The EP-Maldives Friendship Group has held its first meeting in the European Parliament today on the occasion of the Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdul Gafoor Mohamed’s visit to Brussels. Tomáš Zdechovský MEP, a long-term supporter of the democratic transition of Maldives will head the new Parliamentary Group.

“The diplomatic relations of Maldives and the EU has just entered a new phase. From now on, Maldivians can count on the support of our European Parliament Friendship Group and know that the deepening of the EU - Maldives cooperation will remain on the European Parliament’s table”, said Tomáš Zdechovský.

“I am thankful to Tomáš Zdechovský MEP for yet another initiative to help the people of Maldives. A permanent Friendship Group in the European Parliament will facilitate the exchange of information and discussion about the developments in our country. We know that we can count on the support of Tomáš Zdechovský and other Members of the Group for making Maldives a viable EU partner”, added Foreign Secretary Ghafoor Mohamed.

Tomáš Zdechovský received a state award of Maldives in June for a long-term support of human rights and democracy in Maldives. Zdechovský has been helping the opposition in their successful fight against previous authoritarian regime.
