Ahead of the Youth Unemployment Summit to be held in Berlin on 3 July 2013, four political groups in the European Parliament, including the EPP, S&D, ALDE and Greens, have adopted the following declaration.

As Leaders of the EPP Group, S&D, ALDE and Green groups in the European Parliament, we:

  • Note the proposal for the Youth Unemployment summit which will be held in Berlin in July.
  • Welcome the increased attention being paid to this issue
  • Regret that so far only EU Labour ministers, the Commission President and Commissioners and representatives of the rotating Presidency have been invited, and that the European Parliament has not been included to send representatives to the conference.
  • Believe that the European Union can most effectively tackle youth unemployment through a common EU approach rather than ad hoc intergovernmental initiatives
  • Urge the organisers to respect the role of the European Parliament in tacklingthe issues at stake in Berlin, including EU budgetary implications of any actions.

EPP Group Chairman

Hannes Swoboda
S&D Group President

Guy Verhofstadt

Daniel Cohn-Bendit
