Urgent fact-finding mission to Malta to assess the rule of law

justice

Amid serious concerns over the functioning of the rule of law in Malta after the killing of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, the European Parliament will send an urgent fact-finding mission to Malta next week. For too long the truth about her murder has been swept under the carpet, while the rule of law is being undermined. The EPP Group will continue to closely monitor developments in Malta and call for political action to be taken. "The situation in Malta has consequences for the entire European project", says EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber. The EPP Group will be represented on the fact-finding mission by Roberta Metsola MEP.

Chairman Weber visits the Western Balkans

Manfred

From Monday to Wednesday, Manfred Weber, Chairman of the EPP Group, will visit the Western Balkans with stops planned in Belgrade (Serbia), Skopje (Northern Macedonia) and Pristina (Kosovo). The Chairman will visit the Western Balkans to underline the EPP Group’s commitment to a credible European perspective for the countries in the region.

Stopping violence against women

violence

Eradicating all forms of violence against women is at the core of the EPP Group’s priorities. All women and girls should feel free and safe in Europe and no tradition or culture can justify men’s violence against women. There are significant weaknesses in the current legal EU framework for combating violence against women and national laws offer unequal protection for women. This is why the EPP Group strongly advocates for both the EU and all EU countries to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women (the Istanbul Convention). EPP Group Members will participate in a joint debate on Monday with representatives from the Council of the European Union and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe on the issue.

Debate with Hong Kong protest leader Joshua Wong

Umbrella

Following the overwhelming success of the democracy movement in the Hong Kong district elections, where an unprecedented turnout of voters endorsed its programme, the Parliament's Human Rights Committee will hold a debate at its meeting on Monday with one of the protest leaders Joshua Wong, Secretary-General and co-founder of the Demosisto Party, Hong Kong. The EPP Group has always supported the continuing fight of Hong Kong citizens for a transparent and fair electoral system and the respect of human rights.
