We continue to stand with Ukraine!
Statement of Michael Gahler, MEP EPP Group Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Standing Rapporteur on Ukraine, following an erroneous vote on one of the amendments to the 2023 and 2024 reports on Ukraine:
During the vote on Tuesday, a widespread human error and irritation in the voting procedure caused a mistake, which led to international annoyance and questions for clarification addressed to our House by other parliaments and diplomatic missions.
An amendment, originally tabled by the Left, was adopted - accusing the European Union of pursuing a militaristic policy towards Ukraine. This is now paragraph 2 of the adopted Ukraine text.
On behalf of the 70% majority that adopted the Ukraine Report on Tuesday, coming mainly from the political groups of the EPP, S&D, ECR, RENEW, and the GREENS, it has to be stressed that the language of paragraph 2 does not represent the position of the European Parliament.
We have not changed our position on Ukraine. We stand with Ukraine, and we will continue to do so!
The incoming corrections of the votes from the Members of our political groups will clearly show that there is no majority support for paragraph 2 in this house.
The Ukraine report should, in the future, be considered as having been adopted without paragraph 2.
