Twenty years of the EU single market: enhanced mobility for EU citizens
free movement of people was one of the four founding principles of the EU, along with the free movement of goods, capitals and services. But it took several decades from the 1957 Treaty of Rome to the full implementation of this provision. Today it's hard to imagine queuing at borders and showing passports but until relatively recently it was common. The creation of the EU single market, which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, helped to advance the principle of free movement of people – a development that has led to profound social and economic change.
