Syrian Bishops must be released immediately

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament called for the immediate release of the Syrian Orthodox and the Greek Orthodox Bishops of Aleppo, on the proposal of its Chairman Elmar Brok MEP. The kidnapping is unacceptable and inexcusable, no matter who is responsible.

Brok asked the High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union and Vice-President of the European Commission, Baroness Catherine Ashton, to take immediate action in the matter. If certain people from the opposition are responsible, it should be clear to them that they risk losing European and international support, especially after Monday’s Council decision.

Baroness Ashton has confirmed her support.
