Stop bullying allies

A symbolic composition featuring two puzzle pieces positioned closely together, one displaying the colors of the U.S. flag and the other featuring the European Union (EU) flag.

The European Union must stay united and respond firmly to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats against allies. It should do so by boosting strategic autonomy, completing the single market, strengthening cooperation with like-minded partners, and improving its decision-making.

“Blackmail is an unacceptable political tool. At a time of growing threats, we need a strategic EU–US relationship based on mutual respect. The relationship must be built on strengthened cooperation and a shared vision for global peace, security, and prosperity - not on bullying allies. We should respond to Donald Trump’s threats in a firm and decisive way,” stresses Andrzej Halicki MEP, EPP Group Vice-Chair for Foreign Affairs.

“The current state of our transatlantic bond is at its lowest level ever. This is an eye-opener for Europe. The era of the peace dividend is over. We must be able to defend ourselves and build strong strategic alliances. We also need to complete our single market and ensure our decisions are not slowed by internal divisions. Those divisions are too often fuelled by actors who serve the EU’s enemies. Threatening allies will not help Donald Trump maintain support ahead of the upcoming midterm elections,” Halicki adds.
