Nuclear Safety: step towards highest safety standards

“Today’s draft proposal by the European Commission is a good basis for discussion on how to improve the nuclear safety culture in Europe. We particularly welcome the plan to strengthen the role and independence of the national regulators while respecting Member States' responsibility and expertise. Additionally, the introduction of mandatory peer reviews for all nuclear installations will strengthen Europe’s nuclear safety culture. I would like to recall the EPP Group’s call for the obligatory involvement of the neighbouring Member States for installations which are close to borders", said Pilar del Castillo Vera MEP, EPP Group Spokeswoman in the Industry, Research and Energy Committee of the European Parliament.

"Stress tests have clearly shown the importance of independent national regulators, which also have to possess a high level of expert knowledge in undertaking their work. Therefore I am happy that these are also some of the main provisions in the Commission's proposal for a revised Nuclear Safety Directive. I believe that the proposed document is a good basis for further discussions and I am convinced that it will represent an important step towards achieving the highest nuclear safety standards and the further enhancement of our safety culture", said Romana Jordan MEP, EPP Group Deputy Spokeswoman in the Industry, Research and Energy Committee.
