Commenting on the political situation in Italy, the Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul MEP, said:

"My views, free from any influence, on the current political situation in Italy reflect the position of the EPP Group. They are based on the values of Europe's Founding Fathers. The EPP Group has always been a front runner in promoting more European integration, solidarity and unity.

In these difficult times of crisis, for the Euro and the European economy, we have to be honest with the European citizens that we need a rigorous and careful management of public policies by all Member States. This is why we don't stand by those who are not telling the truth to their own people trying to get votes through populist empty promises.

I would like to make it clear, as I have said many times before: the EPP Group is united against all kinds of populism and anti European approaches."
