Reacting to the results of yesterday’s EU summit, the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Manfred Weber MEP said:

“With yesterday’s decision on EU top posts, the EU is finally ready to work on the political decisions that are urgently needed. The choice of Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk as new President of the European Council is an excellent one. Not only is his nomination a strong symbol of the completion of the EU's Eastern enlargement, but Tusk is also a real European and a strong and experienced politician willing to work towards compromise in the European spirit. His election is good for the EU.

Mrs Mogherini should try to compensate her scarce experience on foreign policies through dedication as quickly as possible. In the upcoming Hearings in the European Parliament, the EPP Group will check her competence and challenge her. However, she should be given the chance to prove herself.

The EU must get back to work now. The times of tactical manoeuvring are now behind us. With the announcement of further sanctions against Russia, the EU is giving the only right answer to the unacceptable situation in Eastern Ukraine. We cannot let President Putin unilaterally decide on how to shape new borders.

The EU’s main task is to implement the reform agenda. The priority is growth and new jobs. At the same time, we must do everything to ensure stable finances and consolidated budgets. The EU cannot afford any new crises. This is why we should avoid sending signals that could be interpreted otherwise.”
