EU agrees on ambitious energy efficiency goals

In the early morning hours, negotiators from the European Parliament and EU Member States agreed on a more ambitious energy efficiency target in a trilogue agreement on the revision of the EU's energy efficiency directive. The new directive will include an EU-binding energy efficiency target of 11,7%.

"Today's agreement is an essential component to reach our climate goals for 2030 and become climate neutral by 2050. Together with my EPP Group colleagues I fought hard to secure as much ambition as possible, while at the same time allowing the necessary flexibility for EU Member States that all have their own national circumstances, for example for hydrogen production. We made sure that this directive has a strong governance that will deliver", said Pernille Weiss MEP, EPP Group lead negotiator of the new law.

"The message from this agreement is clear. The EPP Group delivers on climate policy. More efficient use of energy is the best way to lower both energy bills and CO2", Weiss continued.

The revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive is a key element of the European Commission's so-called "FitFor55" Package from July 2021.
