EPP Group to meet Blair, Barnier on Brexit in Ireland: 11-12 May

Brexit and negotiating objectives will top the agenda of an EPP Group Bureau meeting in Co Wicklow, Ireland on 11-12 May, hosted by the Leader of the Irish (Fine Gael) Delegation, Seán Kelly MEP. "Given the unique position of Ireland and the particular challenges for the island of Ireland in the context of Brexit, it is the Grand Seat of Brexit for the EU27," MEP Kelly said.  

"The EPP Group meeting in Wicklow provides an opportunity for deeper discussions and an exchange of views with Irish government representatives and as we look ahead to our negotiating objectives. Our negotiating approach must reflect the interests of our citizens across the EU and of the remaining Member States, including Ireland, which is widely recognised as the Member State that will be most affected by the UK's exit. We are committed to a strong EU27."

EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber will welcome attendees before the Irish Prime Minister, Taoiseach Enda Kenny delivers a keynote speech on Thursday morning, 11 May. Brexit and objectives for the upcoming negotiations will be the main topic of a panel chaired by Esteban González Pons MEP, Vice-Chair of the EPP Group, on Friday, 12 May. During this panel discussion, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair, will address attendees. The EU's Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier, will make a special intervention on the Brexit panel. Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, will also take part.

The future of EU Transatlantic Relations is also on the agenda, with EPP Group Vice-Chairpersons Sandra Kaliniete MEP and Lara Comi MEP leading the session.
