"It takes energy, determination and belief in the future to go, in less than one generation, from a state of war to being a fully-fledged member of the biggest club of democracies. We admire everything that has been accomplished", said the Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul, opening the EPP Group Bureau meeting in Dubrovnik.

The Chairman of the largest political Group in the European Parliament underlined the importance of such a meeting in Croatia, more than 20 years after independence and a war that had enormous economic and human consequences: "The EPP Group has always supported Croatia's European ambitions. Our support is constant and unwavering because we are convinced that we are destined to belong to the same community of values. We welcome you with open arms as a partner and we are very much looking forward to working with you."

Joseph Daul mentioned that Croatia can serve as a role model for the entire region: "This message to Croatia is also a message for the rest of the Western Balkans - it is proof that our enlargement policy works", concluded the Chairman.

The EPP Group Bureau is meeting in Dubrovnik on Thursday and Friday to mark the conclusion of Croatia's accession to the European Union. Croatia will become an EU Member State on 1 July 2013. The EPP Group has consistently supported Croatia on its European path, particularly since the start of EU accession negotiations in 2005. Croatian governments led by HDZ, Member of the European People's Party, conducted the entire process of accession negotiations, ending them with success in June 2011. Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group, and Tomislav Karamarko, President of the HDZ, addressed participants. This two-day meeting will also be attended by Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding and Commissioner Jan Lewandowski.
