Following the announcement that Therese Comodini Cachia will step down from the European Parliament in order to take up a seat in the Maltese Parliament, the EPP Group has appointed Axel Voss MEP, the EPP Group Spokesman on Legal Affairs, to carry on the rapporteurship of this important dossier. The ‘Proposal for a Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market’ was put forward by the European Commission last September. The new legislation will modernise copyright rules and adapt them to the technological advancement of the 21st century, and will lay down rules on exceptions and limitations to copyright protection.

Our aim is to make sure that the new copyright rules will be of no hindrance to new technological developments. Axel Voss MEP

“I would like to thank Therese Comodini Cachia for her work and I wish her all the best in Maltese politics. Well-funded copyright rules represent an important factor for creativity and stimulate investments in the creative sector. Our aim is to strengthen the balanced approach of the new legislation and to make sure that the new copyright rules will be of no hindrance to new technological developments. It is our ambition to achieve a starting point where the rights and expectations of authors and copyright holders on one side, and those of consumers and copyright users on the other, are met”, concluded Voss.
