Hoekstra sovereign, Šefčovič vague

Wopke Hoekstra and Maroš Šefčovič

The EPP Group fully supports the nomination of Wopke Hoekstra as the new European Commissioner for Climate Action, but is unhappy with many vague answers from Maroš Šefčovič in his new role as Vice-President in charge of the Green Deal.

"The Green Deal must go hand in hand with a credible and forward-looking industrial policy. It is particularly satisfying to see that Mr Hoekstra showed willingness to work all across the political landscape to make that possible. His experience with climate diplomacy means the European Union will have a strong representative and negotiator on the international level", said Esther de Lange MEP, the EPP Group's Vice-Chairwoman responsible for Economy and Environment.

"Mr Šefčovič was vague and unconvincing. He expressed no commitment to work with industry. Asked about how resolutely he will defend Europe from being dependent from Russia, he did not answer. This is just not good enough", concluded Peter Liese MEP, the EPP Group's Spokesman on Environment.

Following the decision of the Environment Committee coordinators, both Commissioners-designate, Wopke Hoekstra and Maroš Šefčovič, will be asked to answer additional written questions. The plenary is expected to hold a formal vote on both on Thursday.
