EPP axes red tape: Protect forests without bureaucracy
The European Parliament has adopted a compromise to simplify the European Deforestation Regulation, a move welcomed by the EPP Group. The simplification aims to reduce unnecessary paperwork while preventing illegal deforestation.
"We are pleased that the European Parliament has adopted the simplification of the European Deforestation Regulation, which reflects the balanced compromise agreed upon by 24 EU countries. The simplification is a necessary step forward in our efforts to promote sustainable forestry practices and prevent illegal deforestation, while also taking into account the concerns of farmers, foresters, and businesses," said Christine Schneider MEP, the European Parliament's lead negotiator on the European Deforestation Regulation.
The simplification includes a one-year postponement for all companies, giving authorities and operators the time needed to implement the rules properly. Additionally, it provides relief measures for micro and small producers in low-risk countries, ensuring proportionate application.
"This approach avoids unnecessary bureaucracy, supports responsible forest management, and strengthens the long-term effectiveness of the regulation," Schneider added.
