Don't drive energy prices further up
The EPP Group wants to fast-track changes to the EU methane rules to secure Europe's energy supplies and prevent further energy price spikes for households and businesses.
"Don't drive energy prices further up. Europe already faces some of the highest energy prices in the world. We must not impose new rules faster than energy suppliers can adapt, making gas imports more difficult and more expensive. That is why the EPP Group is calling for a postponement of the new rules, giving businesses the time and certainty they need to comply," says Dimitris Tsiodras MEP, the EPP Group's lead negotiator on the file, following today's European Parliament vote on fast-tracking a proposed one-year delay to the EU methane rules.
"Cutting methane emissions is important, but Europe must also secure the energy it needs to heat homes and keep industry running. Families need affordable bills, while businesses need fair prices to stay competitive and invest," adds Tsiodras.
Today's vote means the European Parliament can vote on the proposed changes to the EU methane rules on Thursday.
