Bulgaria: Martens and Daul congratulate GERB for remarkable consecutive victory; welcome failure of populism and smear tactics of Socialists

The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens, and the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul, have congratulated the election victory of GERB, a member party of the EPP, which secured 31% of the vote (according to the preliminary results).

“We warmly congratulate the election victory of GERB and its leader Boyko Borisov. GERB’s consecutive electoral victory – the first time in Bulgaria’s contemporary history – is remarkable considering the relentless smear tactics and populist rhetoric of the Socialists. The people of Bulgaria have again put their trust in GERB because they recognise the important reforms that were implemented by Boyko Borisov’s government, under the weight of the unprecedented global economic and financial crisis. Bulgarians want their country to become a prosperous, modern and dynamic EU Member State and they know that only GERB has the experience and conviction to achieve this goal”, Martens and Daul underlined.

“Therefore, we sincerely hope that the other political parties in Bulgaria will act responsibly and will not hamper the formation of the new government led by the winning party, GERB”, Martens and Daul concluded.
