"We want a balanced reform of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) - the necessary ambitions to guarantee the implementation of the Paris Agreement, while at the same time, sufficient protection for those industrial sectors that are exposed to fierce international competition. These guarantees are included in the package adopted by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee. It strikes the right balance between climate efforts on the one hand, and jobs and competitiveness on the other hand”, said Ivo Belet MEP, who is in charge of the ETS dossier for the Environment Committee on behalf of the EPP Group, following the adoption by the committee of its position on the ETS reform today.

Belet continued: “A well-functioning ETS is the best incentive for our industry to reduce emissions gradually and to make the switch to clean energy and production. What we need is a realistic, feasible approach that can count on broad support in Parliament so that the EP can be a strong partner in the trilogue negotiations with the Council of Ministers.”

Giovanni La Via MEP, Chairman of the Environment Committee, added: “Following the European Commission’s proposal, and the 650 amendments tabled to it, the Environment Committee delivered a strong signal to the Council. This was an ambitious, yet balanced vote, and the EPP Group had a strong say, thanks to the hard work of our Shadow Rapporteur and Spokesman. We need to implement the Paris Agreement and meet our climate targets without endangering the competitiveness of our industries.”

Peter Liese MEP, EPP Group Spokesman in the Environment Committee, added: "Ambitious climate policy combined with the appropriate protection of industry against competitors from third countries is the right mix to achieve a competitive low carbon economy in 2050." Liese particularly welcomed the innovation fund: "It will help industry develop new low-carbon technologies and innovation in energy-intensive industries."

The plenary vote on the post-2020 ETS reform is scheduled for February.
