"In an interdependent and multipolar world, the EU and the US should play key roles in world politics and the global economy, as well as share responsibility for promoting peace, human rights and tackling global challenges," says Francisco Millán Mon MEP, Rapporteur on the role of the EU in promoting a broader Transatlantic Partnership. His resolution was adopted today in the European Parliament.

Millán Mon proposes to create a Transatlantic Political Council to serve as a body for systematic consultation and coordination on foreign and security policy. He calls on the EU and the US to work in a coordinated manner with a view to contributing to a stable international order of peace and cooperation.

In addition, the report addresses a wider Atlantic perspective, including Latin America. This is a region with close ties to the EU and US. Climate change, the Millennium Development Goals, global governance, the fight against international crime and drug trafficking are areas in which his proposals highlights the possibility of wider Atlantic cooperation that includes Latin America and could extend to African countries on the Atlantic shore.

The Rapporteur also suggests an EU-US summit as soon as possible to decide on a common agenda for short and long-term goals, on both bilateral matters and global and regional issues.

"Effective action on these goals and an efficient response to the current international conflicts requires greater cooperation between the two partners, especially during times of budgetary restraints," concluded Millán Mon.
